Larry Goldings Trio: Sweet Science

Adventurous mainstream jazz need not be cast from the same old stuff we've been listening to for 50 years. Larry Goldings ensures that tradition remains solid, as the backbone for everything he creates. However, with Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart, he pushes the envelope beyond the point where many of today's leaders remain satisfied. Goldings ensures that jazz won't become stagnant. Even lovely classic tunes such as 'This Guy's In Love With You' and 'Spring Is Here' receive a partial facelift. The trio smokes. And yet, their allegiance to mainstream jazz never falters. Bernstein is a lyrical guitarist who interprets unspoken words through nuance. Stewart brings to the session a light touch and firm foundation. Goldings employs distinctive changes in volume and intensity for effect. Together, the trio reaches out to connect with its audience in natural fashion. For his fifth recording with this band, Goldings has decided to infuse several selections with eerie science fiction thoughts. 'Chorale,' 'Come In and Pray,' 'Sweet Science' and 'Lookout' each contain a few reminders. But it's not an album themed for one specific element. The session includes funk and fun, loose ensemble interplay and highly creative solo passages.
