Brian Lynch Meets Bill Charlap & Fuschia/Red
Trumpeter Brian Lynch is one of the most versatile artists in jazz today, with a pedigree that includes stints with Art Blakey, Eddie Palmieri, Horace Silver and Phil Woods, but these two discs recorded three months apart in 2003 demonstrate such a diverse spectrum of stylistic approaches that their contrasting perspectives are impressive even considering their creator's background.
Meets Bill Charlap
The date with Charlap, which also features the formidable rhythm team of Dwayne Burno and Joe Farnsworth, is the kind of standard farebebop, ballads and bluesthat is often lackluster in the hands of lesser bands, but brings out the best in these masterful musicians. The leader's relaxed Latinized 7/4 arrangement of "On Green Dolphin Street," played on muted trumpet is as inspired as any interpretation of the song ever recorded and the gorgeous "Autumn Nocturne" featuring Lynch's lyrical flugelhorn is as moving a version as any ever played. A thoroughly modern arrangement by Lynch of "My Heart Stood Still" swings splendidly, showing off the rhythm section's taste and talent. Bird's "Cheryl" burns with a cool blue flame that few players are able to still light today. The second half of the date features three of Lynch's intelligently crafted originals"Before The First Cup," an appealing waltz; "On The Dot," a straight-ahead smoker featuring Farnsworth; and the blues "Blues For Gilad," with Chico Buarque's beautiful bossa nova "Atras da Porta" and the ballad "Come Rain Or Come Shine," a trumpet/piano duet, in between.
Brian Lynch Quartet
Fuchsia/Red reveals a Lynch of a different color - one heretofore-unheard on record. The live date, recorded at The Cellar in Vancouver documents the trumpeter's love of what he calls "electro-mechanical musicelectric music with a lot of funky moving parts, like valves, wah-wah pedals, and the tines of the beloved Rhodes." Comprised of all new music (including an original arrangement of Björk's "Aurora") written by Lynch specifically for this group recording (with the phenomenal Fender Rhodes pianist Brad Turner and the hard groovin' bass and drum team of André Lachance and Bernie Arai) Fuchsia/Red is an electric Miles-inspired excursion conceived and executed with such assurance as to create a whole new perspective on Lynch's artistry. The music is alternately earthy, spacey, pretty, funky and swinging and often, just like Lynch, all of these things at once.
