"Soul Eyes" is a companion piece to a CD released last year on Concord entitled "Yours and Mine". Recorded at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 1989, it's a welcome addition to an impressive batch of albums that have been issued since Stan's death in 1991. Joining Stan on the bandstand are Ben Riley (drums), Ray Drummond (bass) and one of Stan's favorite pianists Kenny Barron. Along with providing solid accompaniment, Barron contributes "Voyage" and "Feijada", a pair of upbeat compositions that became a regular part of Getz's concert repertoire in the 80's. As good as Getz was on the swingers, its the ballads that best reveal his lovely tone and lyrical phrasing. His readings of Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes", Ellington's "Warm Valley" and Strayhorn's "Blood Count" are guaranteed to stir your emotions and touch your heart. In the liner notes album producer Steve Getz promises to release more of his fathers music in the future. For fans of this all time great tenor player, that's good news indeed.
