I bow down at the Alter of The Band. Owning the 2cd version of this amazing musical testament, Rock Of Ages, is as close as it gets to being in Nirvana. They just achieved so many astounding things just within one song because they were such an amazing ensemble with the best three voices in rock, who had the best composer writing specifically for their voices. And the best band. Full stop.
And your ten best I have to go along with, already owning nine of them. I have to get up to scratch with The J. Geils Band. And I agree with many of the next ten or so.

Fifteen years later, I still stand my my entire list. But with the passing of Levon Helm, it seems more important to consider Rock of Ages and Before the Flood definitive renderings of this important group.

I will go further, at the risk of being accused of closed-mindedness, that no live recordings of this caliber have been made, Nirvana or not. I am grateful to have come of age with this music was new and vital.
