Warning! Classic music unfortunately marred by Keith Jarrett's drunken style mumbling on every track.

Jarrett's mumbling has been a controversial thing for many years, but I'm always curious why it's such a big deal. Oscar Peterson did it, Bobo Stenson does it (albeit not quiet as loudly). Plenty of pianists and other musicians (bassist Arild Andersen's another) do it at varying volume levels.

Many musicians do this to channel the melodies they hear in their heads out to their hands. In some cases you have to try to find a way to block it out, and in the case of someone like Jarrett that's worth it. Like his mumbling or not, there's no doubt Jarrett is one of the most important jazz artists to emerge in the past half century. His forthcoming trio disc, Yesterdays (due out late January), is another winner.

    Best!
    John
