Chris, one thing which may not be obvious but is important is that this remaster is in stereo. This two track recording was not widely used until much later but was generally being adopted from the early 1960s. So for a recording dated 1958, when only a few recordings were captured this way (eg, Sonny Rollins' "Way Out West"), this is a real bonus because it adds to the clarity of the performance and with musicians of this calibre this is an important bonus. I would pay good money just to hear LaFaro tune up his bass, let alone hear the dexterous interplay between Tjader and Getz. Thanks for your excellent review of this re-issue.

Charlie Byrd did not discover bossa nova. When in Brazil his drummer, Bill Reichenbach and others in this band found the recordings and insisted Byrd listen to them. He initially couldn't care less. Eventually he was prevailed upon to take the recordings back and thereby others heard them.
